Details & Equipment

1989 Amel Super Maramu

She has been re-rigged as a single-masted sloop with a a highly reliable system incorporating a three slab-reefed, six full length batten, sizeable roach mainsail on a one-piece mast track with Torlon ball bearing cars while retaining an equal sail area as *both* in-mast furling main and mizzen sails on a standard Super Maramu ketch. A separate external stainless steel track for hoisting a storm trysail (which is included as well) is fastened to starboard of the mainsail one-piece track. In addition, an inner forestay, with Dyneema running backstays, has been added for flying storm jibs. The forestay tang is thru-bolted the vertical bulkhead inside the forward lazzerette and thus presents zero leak potential to the inside cabin of the boat.

Our mainmast height is also less than a ketch rigged Super Maramu--she has an air draft of under 63 feet and has traveled inside the intracoastal waterway (ICW) between Fort Pierce and Port Canaveral at various stages of tide with 2+ feet to spare under the bridges. From a water draft perspective, she has traveled from Mile 0 at Norfolk, Virgina to Melbourne, Florida completely within the ICW.

During the winter and spring of 2012 we hauled at Cape Marina in Port Canaveral, Florida and hired MarinePro of Cocoa to repower the Amel. MarinePro took out the original Perkins M80T diesel, completely removed the Amel U-Drive transmission system, and installed a new Yanmar 4JH4-HTE with an 8 degree downangle Kanzaki KMH4A transmission coupled to a conventional straight Aquamet 22 shaft. Custom 316L stainless steel V-strut supports shaft with Max-Prop propeller. Details of the repower on separate page here.

Specifications

All Amels share a couple of common design elements which make them unique and desirable:

- Water-tight compartments and collision bulkheads built in as standard
- Select African mahogany interior woodwork throughout the boat with virtual zero wood trim on the exterior of the boat for easy maintenance
- All systems are installed with access in mind for upkeep and maintenance
- Sail handling systems optimized for short-handed crew

These are the specifications for standard ketch-rigged Super Maramu as built in 1989.
